MUMBAI: Sony LIV today launched its new Hindi web series, ’13th: Some Lessons Aren’t Taught in Classrooms,’ starring Gagan Dev Riar (of Scam 2003 fame) and Paresh Pahuja. The new drama, which is now available for streaming, delves into the high-pressure world of India’s competitive exam coaching industry, blending a heartfelt story of mentorship with the high-stakes environment of a modern ed-tech startup.

The five-episode series is created by Sameer Mishra and directed by Nishil Sheth. It is reportedly inspired by the real-life journey of renowned IIT-JEE and NEET educator, Mohit Tyagi.

Plot: Mentorship Meets Ed-Tech Startup

The core of ’13th’ revolves around the powerful bond between a dedicated teacher and his former student.

Gagan Dev Riar takes on the role of MT Sir, a brilliant but unconventional IIT-JEE coach known for his unwavering values and commitment to authentic education. His character embodies the struggles of a teacher facing setbacks in a system increasingly driven by commercial metrics.

Paresh Pahuja plays Ritesh, a highly successful venture capitalist and MT Sir’s former pupil. Disillusioned by the corporate world and the chase for sky-high valuations, Ritesh decides to pause his own career. He returns to his mentor with the ambition of helping MT Sir scale his visionary, but low-profile, educational institute into a successful ed-tech startup.

The series explores the conflicts that arise when the principles of pure, idealistic teaching clash with the financial demands and marketing strategies of a profit-driven startup culture. It is described as a moving narrative about second chances, gratitude, and the profound, life-long influence of a great mentor.

Star Cast and Production

In addition to Gagan Dev Riar and Paresh Pahuja, the series features a strong ensemble cast including Girija Oak Godbole and Pradnya Motghare.

The show’s release today positions it as a significant addition to Sony LIV’s lineup, exploring themes of ambition and integrity that resonate widely with Indian audiences familiar with the intense academic competition landscape.
