Mumbai: Following the recent announcement that Amar Singh Chamkila has secured two nominations at the International Emmy Awards, the film’s co-writer, Sajid Ali, has been quick to credit actor-musician Diljit Dosanjh for the movie’s authenticity and success.

The Netflix biographical drama, co-written by Sajid Ali and his brother, director Imtiaz Ali, has been nominated for Best TV Movie/Mini-Series, while Diljit Dosanjh earned a nod for Best Performance by an Actor.

In a recent exclusive interview, Sajid Ali asserted that the decision to cast Dosanjh was the pivotal factor in the film’s quality.

“The day that Diljit was cast, the fate of the film was sealed,” Sajid Ali said. “The genius of casting him made the film what it is, as he made it so authentic. Being a musician himself and from the land, he brought in authenticity to the portrayal as the music of the film was performed live. Those things really cut through and created magic.”

Ali further praised Dosanjh for bringing an “x-factor” that resonated deeply with the audience. He suggested that relying on market calculations is not an assurance of success, stating, “The only insurance is the quality and Diljit’s casting was a sign of quality.”

The film, which chronicles the life of the controversial and beloved Punjabi folk singer Amar Singh Chamkila, has been widely acclaimed since its digital release. Diljit Dosanjh’s performance has been highlighted by critics for seamlessly embodying the voice and persona of the late artist.

The International Emmy Awards are scheduled to take place on November 24, 2025, in New York. The dual nominations for Amar Singh Chamkila are being celebrated as a major moment for Indian cinema on the global stage.
