Mumbai: The clash of titans at the box office this festive season has resulted in a clear winner, with Rishab Shetty’s mythological prequel, ‘Kantara: Chapter 1,’ delivering a spectacular performance that has completely overshadowed the Bollywood romantic-comedy, ‘Sunny Sanskari Ki Tulsi Kumari,’ starring Varun Dhawan and Janhvi Kapoor.

Within just two days of its release on the national holiday of October 2nd, the Kannada film ‘Kantara: Chapter 1’ has crossed the massive ₹100 crore net collection mark in India, confirming its status as an undeniable pan-India blockbuster. In contrast, the Varun-Janhvi starrer is reportedly inching towards the ₹15 crore mark after two days, struggling to find a solid footing against the South Indian cinematic phenomenon.

‘Kantara: Chapter 1’ Sets New Benchmarks

The spiritual prequel to the 2022 global sensation Kantara has proved that the audience’s hunger for mythology and epic storytelling is insatiable.

  • Day 1 Collection: The film opened to a phenomenal pan-India net collection of approximately ₹61.85 crore across all languages (Kannada, Hindi, Telugu, Tamil, and Malayalam). Trade reports suggest its worldwide gross on Day 1 was a staggering ₹90 crore.
  • ₹100 Crore Club Entry: By Day 2 (Friday), the film added an estimated ₹43.65 crore to its tally, pushing its total domestic net collection past ₹105.5 crore. The immediate entry into the ₹100 crore club underscores the extraordinary buzz and positive word-of-mouth the film has generated.

The Hindi version alone performed strongly, collecting around ₹18.5 crore on its opening day, showcasing the franchise’s deep penetration into the North Indian market, a feat that directly impacted the business of its Bollywood competitor.

‘Sunny Sanskari Ki Tulsi Kumari’ Registers Modest Opening

The romantic-comedy ‘Sunny Sanskari Ki Tulsi Kumari’ (SSKTK), directed by Shashank Khaitan and backed by Dharma Productions, was positioned as the festive Bollywood family entertainer. While it saw a respectable opening thanks to the holiday, it failed to maintain momentum on Day 2.

  • Day 1 Collection: The film opened with a decent ₹9.25 crore net collection in India.
  • Day 2 Dip: The collections saw a significant drop on Day 2 (Friday), with early estimates suggesting the film added around ₹5.25 crore, bringing its two-day total to approximately ₹14.5 crore.

Despite having a strong star cast, the film’s box office performance has been widely attributed to the overpowering impact of Kantara: Chapter 1. Trade analysts noted that while the rom-com genre has historically faced collection hurdles, clashing with a powerhouse like the Kantara prequel made the climb even steeper.

The Clash Analysis: Genre vs. Spectacle

The contrasting box office outcomes highlight the current preference of the Indian audience. While SSKTK offered a lighthearted, formulaic romantic drama, Kantara: Chapter 1 delivered a spectacular, visually rich film rooted in regional folklore, mythology, and intense action.

Prior to the release, director Shashank Khaitan had expressed optimism about the simultaneous release, suggesting that “there’s a space for all kinds of films,” and viewers would likely choose to watch both. However, the early numbers unequivocally indicate that the audience overwhelmingly gravitated towards the large-scale spectacle and cinematic scope offered by Rishab Shetty’s creation.

The weekend figures will be crucial for Sunny Sanskari Ki Tulsi Kumari to recover ground, but as of now, the box office report card has a distinct winner: ‘Kantara: Chapter 1’ has cemented its position as the festival’s undisputed cinematic champion.
